BACKGROUND: Maternal infections remain a significant contributor to maternal mortality worldwide. Majority of births in northern Nigeria occur at home and are attended by Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs). Little has been documented about their knowledge and practice on infection prevention and control practices in Kano, northern Nigeria. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the level as well as factors associated with TBAs' infection prevention and control knowledge and practices. METHODS: The study is the baseline phase of a quasi-experimental study, conducted in a rural LGA in Kano State, Nigeria. Using an adapted tool, 163 eligible TBAs were surveyed. Knowledge and practice of IPC were scored, aggregated, and dichotomized into good or poor. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to predict knowledge and practice of IPC. RESULTS: Majority (79.1%) of the TBAs exhibited poor IPC knowledge but many (78.5%) reported good practice. Good knowledge of IPC was predicted by the TBAs' age: a six-fold increased likelihood (AOR=6.25, 95% CI: 1.02- 38.53) and almost five-fold increased likelihood (AOR=4.75, 95% CI: 1.39- 16.24) for those in their second and fourth decades of life. TBAs who reported poor practice of IPC were 83% less likely (AOR=0.17, 95% CI: 0.03- 0.92) to have good knowledge of IPC. TBAs' practice was only linked to previous training (AOR=0.17, 95% CI: 0.04- 0.76). CONCLUSION: TBAs knowledge of IPC was low although reported practice was good. The need for tailored training interventions to enhance knowledge and skills for safe delivery care is paramount to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.


CONTEXTE: Les infections maternelles restent une contribution significative à la mortalité maternelle dans le monde. La majorité des accouchements dans le nord du Nigeria ont lieu à domicile et sont assistés par des TBA. Peu de choses ont été documentées sur leurs connaissances et leurs pratiques en matière de prévention et de contrôle des infections à Kano, dans le nord du Nigeria. OBJECTIFS: Cette étude a évalué le niveau de connaissances et de pratiques des TBA en matière de prévention et de contrôle des infections, ainsi que les facteurs associés. MÉTHODES: L'étude est la phase de base d'une étude quasiexpérimentale, menée dans une LGA rurale de l'État de Kano, au Nigeria. En utilisant un outil adapté, 163 TBA éligibles ont été interrogés. Les connaissances et les pratiques en matière de PCI ont été évaluées, agrégées et dichotomisées en bonnes ou mauvaises. Une analyse de régression logistique binaire a été utilisée pour prédire les connaissances et les pratiques en matière de PCI. RÉSULTATS: La majorité (79,1 %) des TBA présentaient des connaissances médiocres en PCI, mais beaucoup (78,5 %) ont déclaré avoir de bonnes pratiques. De bonnes connaissances en PCI étaient prédites par l'âge des TBA : une probabilité multipliée par six (AOR=6,25, IC à 95 % : 1,02-38,53) et presque multipliée par cinq (AOR=4,75, IC à 95 % : 1,39-16,24) pour ceux dans leur deuxième et quatrième décennies de vie. Les TBA qui ont déclaré une mauvaise pratique de la PCI étaient 83 % moins susceptibles (AOR=0,17, IC à 95 % : 0,03-0,92) d'avoir de bonnes connaissances en PCI. La pratique des TBA était uniquement liée à une formation antérieure (AOR=0,17, IC à 95 % : 0,04­0,76). CONCLUSION: Les connaissances des TBA en matière de PCI étaient faibles bien que les pratiques déclarées étaient bonnes. La nécessité d'interventions de formation sur mesure pour améliorer les connaissances et les compétences en matière de soins de l'accouchement sécurisés est primordiale pour améliorer les résultats maternels et néonatals. BACKGROUND: Strengthening obstetric nurses' and midwives' health education competence is the investment and guarantee for the population's future health. The purpose of study is to establish national norms for their health education competence, and explore possible influencing factors for providing an uniform criterion identifying levels and weaknesses. METHODS: An online questionnaire with a standard process was used to collect data. Three normative models were constructed, and multiple linear regression analysis analyzed possible influencing factors. RESULTS: The sample respondents (n = 3027) represented obstetric nurses and midwives nationally. Three health education competency normative norms (mean, percentile and demarcation norm) were constructed separately. Locations, hospital grade, department, marital status, training times and satisfaction with health education training influenced obstetrical nurses' and midwives' health education competence (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: This study constructed the first national standard for assessing obstetric nurses' and midwives' health education competence, providing a scientific reference to evaluate the degree of health education competence directly. These known factors could help clinical and policy managers designate practice improvement measures. In future research, Grade I hospitals should be studied with larger sample sizes, and indicators need to improve to reflect health education's effect better.

AIM: Different clinical practice guidelines include recommendations on how to prevent and repair obstetric perineal trauma, as well as the use of episiotomy. To evaluate the variability in midwives' professional practices for preventing and repairing perineal trauma, as well as the professional factors that may be associated with the restrictive use of episiotomy. DESIGN: Observational cross-sectional study. METHODS: Three hundred five midwives completed an anonymous questionnaire developed by the authors and distributed across various midwifery scientific societies. The main outcomes measured were the frequencies of adopting specific practices related to perineal injury prevention and repair, episiotomy technique and restrictive episiotomy use (<10%). Odds ratios (OR) and adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% confidence intervals were estimated. RESULTS: Intrapartum perineal massage was not normally used by 253 (83%) of midwives, and 186 (61%) applied compresses soaked in warm water to the perineum. Regarding episiotomy, there was a great deal of variability, noting that 129 (42.3%) adopted a restrictive use of this procedure, 125 (41%) performed it between 10% and 20%, while 51 midwives (16.7%) performed it in more than 20% of cases. In addition, 165 (54.1%) midwives followed an incision angle of 60º. Concerning tears, 155 (50.8%) usually sutured first-degree tears and 273 (89.5%) always sutured second-degree tears. Midwives attending home births (aOR = 6.5; 95% CI: 2.69-15.69), working at a teaching hospital (aOR = 3.69; 95% CI: 1.39-9.84), and the ones who recently completed their professional training (aOR = 3.58; 95% CI: 1.46-8.79) were significantly more likely to adopt a restrictive use of episiotomy. CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant variability in Spanish midwives' practices for preventing and repairing perineal tears. Moreover, the restrictive use of episiotomy is associated with midwives attending home births, working in teaching hospitals and having recent professional training. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the risk perceptions of midwifery and nursing senior students regarding COVID-19 and compliance with vaccination and protective measures. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted in two academic years on senior midwifery and nursing students (n = 358). In the present study, the descriptive characteristics of the students and the COVID-19 risk perception scale were used. RESULTS: The students' COVID-19 Risk Perception Scale scores were at a moderate level and a similar level in both years of this study. More than 80% of the students were fully vaccinated, and the family history of COVID-19 was positive in approximately half of them. In the second year of the pandemic, they paid less attention to social distance and avoidance of being indoors. CONCLUSION: Although the COVID-19 risk perceptions of future health professional students remained at a similar level during the examined period, it was found that in the second year of the pandemic, they started to get used to the process and paid less attention to social protective measures.

BACKGROUND: Assessment ability lies at the core of midwives' capacity to judge and treat clinical problems effectively. Influenced by the traditional teaching method of "teacher-led and content-based", that teachers involve imparting a large amount of knowledge to students and students lack active thinking and active practice, the clinical assessment ability of midwifery students in China is mostly at a medium or low level. Improving clinical assessment ability of midwifery students, especially critical thinking, is highly important in practical midwifery education. Therefore, we implemented a new teaching program, "typical case discussion and scenario simulation", in the Midwifery Health Assessment course. Guided by typical cases, students were organized to actively participate in typical case discussions and to promote active thinking and were encouraged to practice actively through scenario simulation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of this strategy on the critical thinking ability of midwifery students. METHOD: A total of 104 midwifery students in grades 16-19 at the West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University, were included as participants through convenience sampling. All the students completed the Midwifery Health Assessment course in the third year of university. Students in grades 16 and 17 were assigned to the control group, which received routine teaching in the Midwifery Health Assessment, while students in grades 18 and 19 were assigned to the experimental group, for which the "typical case discussion and scenario simulation" teaching mode was employed. The Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory-Chinese Version (CTDI-CV) and Midwifery Health Assessment Course Satisfaction Questionnaire were administered after the intervention. RESULTS: After the intervention, the critical thinking ability of the experimental group was greater than that of the control group (284.81 ± 27.98 and 300.94 ± 31.67, p = 0.008). Furthermore, the experimental group exhibited higher scores on the four dimensions of Open-Mindedness (40.56 ± 5.60 and 43.59 ± 4.90, p = 0.005), Analyticity (42.83 ± 5.17 and 45.42 ± 5.72, p = 0.020), Systematicity (38.79 ± 4.70 and 41.88 ± 6.11, p = 0.006), and Critical Thinking Self-Confidence (41.35 ± 5.92 and 43.83 ± 5.89, p = 0.039) than did the control group. The course satisfaction exhibited by the experimental group was greater than that exhibited by the control group (84.81 ± 8.49 and 90.19 ± 8.41, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION: The "typical case discussion and scenario simulation" class mode can improve the critical thinking ability of midwifery students and enhance their curriculum satisfaction. This approach carries a certain degree of promotional significance in medical education.

BACKGROUND: Nurses and midwives are at the forefront of the provision of Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (EmONC) and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is crucial to provide them with competencies they need to provide quality services. This research aimed to assess uptake and accessibility of midwives and nurses to CPD and determine their knowledge and skills gaps in key competencies of EmONC to inform the CPD programming. METHODS: The study applied a quantitative, cross-sectional, and descriptive research methodology. Using a random selection, forty (40) health facilities (HFs) were selected out of 445 HFs that performed at least 20 deliveries per month from July 1st, 2020 to June 30th, 2021 in Rwanda. Questionnaires were used to collect data on updates of CPD, knowledge on EmONC and delivery methods to accessCPD. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS statistics 27 software. RESULTS: Nurses and midwives are required by the Rwandan midwifery regulatory body to complete at least 60 CPD credits before license renewal. However, the study findings revealed that most health care providers (HCPs) have not been trained on EmONC after graduation from their formal education. Results indicated that HCPs who had acquired less than 60 CPD credits related to EmONC training were 79.9% overall, 56.3% in hospitals, 82.2% at health centres and 100% at the health post levels. This resulted in skills and knowledge gaps in management of Pre/Eclampsia, Postpartum Hemorrhage and essential newborn care. The most common method to access CPD credits included workshops (43.6%) and online training (34.5%). Majority of HCPs noted that it was difficult to achieve the required CPD credits (57.0%). CONCLUSION: The findings from this study revealed a low uptake of critical EmONC training by nurses and midwives in the form of CPD. The study suggests a need to integrate EmONC into the health workforce capacity building plan at all levels and to make such training systematic and available in multiple and easily accessible formats. IMPLICATION ON NURSING AND MIDWIFERY POLICY: Findings will inform the revision of policies and strategies to improve CPD towards accelerating capacity for the reduction of preventable maternal and perinatal deaths as well as reducing maternal disabilities in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial traumatisation associated with giving birth, can occur in those present with the woman giving birth, a phenomenon known as vicarious trauma. It has been identified that there are currently no interventions available for midwifery students who have experienced vicarious trauma following difficult birth experiences. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether the counselling intervention developed by Gamble et al. (2005), can be adapted for midwifery students to be appropriately and feasibly used as a counselling intervention with peers who have experienced midwifery practice-related vicarious trauma. DESIGN: Interpretive descriptive methodology. SETTING: This study was set at two Australian universities from which pre-registration midwifery courses are delivered. PARTICIPANTS: The work of reviewing the original tool and adapting it for use by and with midwifery students associated with this project was conducted by a key stakeholder group of seven representative midwifery students and five midwifery academics. METHODS: Ethics were approved. Data were collected via one face to face and two online conversations using the Microsoft Teams™ platform. Reflexive Thematic analysis were applied to revise the tool following each round of data collection and to finalise the adaptation of the intervention for its new intended purpose. RESULTS: The Midwifery Student Peer Debriefing Tool is presented as a six-step intervention that guides the midwifery student through a process of debriefing with their peer. The feasibility of the tool resulted in an overarching theme labelled "I want this to mean something" and captures the therapeutic power of peer debriefing toward a meaningful outcome that fostered growth, and a deeper understanding of the profession. CONCLUSION: Vicarious trauma is widely recognised as a core reason for midwives and midwifery students leaving the workforce. The peer debriefing tool helps midwifery students move through the process of recovering from adversity but also fostered learnings about midwifery practice and the profession.

BACKGROUND: The midwifery continuity of care model is one of the care models that have not been evaluated well in some countries including Iran. We aimed to assess the effect of a program based on this model on the clinical competence of midwifery students and delivery outcomes in Ahvaz, Iran. METHODS: This sequential embedded mixed-methods study will include a quantitative and a qualitative phase. In the first stage, based on the Iranian midwifery curriculum and review of seminal midwifery texts, a questionnaire will be developed to assess midwifery students' clinical competence. Then, in the second stage, the quantitative phase (randomized clinical trial) will be conducted to see the effect of continuity of care provided by students on maternal and neonatal outcomes. In the third stage, a qualitative study (conventional content analysis) will be carried out to investigate the students' and mothers' perception of continuity of care. Finally, the results of the quantitative and qualitative phases will be integrated. DISCUSSION: According to the nature of the study, the findings of this research can be effectively used in providing conventional midwifery services in public centers and in midwifery education. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences (IR.AJUMS.REC.1401.460). Also, the study protocol was registered in the Iranian Registry for Randomized Controlled Trials (IRCT20221227056938N1).

BACKGROUND: The role of the midwife is emotionally demanding with many midwives experiencing high levels of stress and burnout, and a great number considering leaving the profession. This has serious implications for the delivery of high-quality, safe maternity care. One of the major factors leading to job dissatisfaction is the conflict between midwives' aspiration of truly 'being' with the woman and the institutional expectations of the role which focuses on the 'doing' aspects of the job. 'Being' present to a woman's psychological needs, whilst meeting the institutional demands, requires high levels of emotional intelligence (EI) in the midwife. Therefore, enhancing midwives' EI could be beneficial. EI EDUCATION PROGRAMME: An EI programme was made available to midwives with the intention to promote their emotional intelligence and enable them to utilise relaxation techniques for those in their care. AIM: To explore midwives' perspectives on the influence of the EI education programme on their emotional wellbeing and experiences of practice. METHOD: The study took a descriptive qualitative approach. Thirteen midwives participated in focus group interviews. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. FINDINGS: The overarching theme of 'The Ripple Effect' included three themes of 'Me and my relationships', 'A different approach to practice' and 'Confidence and empowerment'. The programme was seen to create a positive ripple effect, influencing midwives personally, their approach to practice, and feelings of confidence in their role. CONCLUSION: EI education can reduce emotional stress in midwives, enhance their empathy and feelings of confidence, thus, improving the quality of care they provide.

BACKGROUND: The Vietnam midwifery report acknowledges that while health services are available in Vietnam, there is growing need to increase levels of respectful maternal care provided to women in labour. OBJECTIVE: In conjunction with newborns Vietnam charity, our objective was to assess the perceived continuous professional development needs of midwives working in Vietnam to inform development of an intranatal respectful maternal care education resource. METHOD: A qualitative exploratory descriptive method was used to conduct a training needs analysis, which identified perceived education requirements of midwives in Vietnam in relation to providing respectful maternal care. PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of midwives (n = 49) participated in the study. DATA-COLLECTION: Eight on-line focus groups were carried out in four hospitals (maternity units) across Vietnam using WebEx, with the interview schedule informed by the World Health Organization guide for delivering intrapartum care for a positive birth experience. DATA-ANALYSIS: Data were transcribed into English and analysed using the 6-steps of thematic analysis outlined by Braun and Clark. FINDINGS: Three themes and 9 sub-themes were developed from the data. The first theme addressed aspects that contribute towards creating a positive birth experience; the second theme observed barriers to changing practice; and the third theme noted that there are a variety of preferred teaching methods. CONCLUSIONS: In response to the training needs analysis, a respectful maternal care education resource has been designed to transform selected areas of intranatal care in Vietnam. Integrating the respectful maternal care educational resource into midwives' continuous professional development in Vietnam is intended to increase women's rights to have safe childbirth, which accommodates choice and control, and promotes a positive birth experience. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Post-completion and evaluation, we hope that the intranatal respectful maternal care educational resource will be rolled out to all practising midwives in Vietnam.

The study was cross-sectional research that surveyed 410 nurses and midwives from March 2020 to March 2021 in Turkey. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of nurses and midwives towards recognizing violence against women. The "Scale for Nurses' and Midwives' Recognition of the Symptoms of Violence against Women" were used. The average total scale score was 20.3 ± 3.2. The score of participants who are receiving postgraduate education, working in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics, and considering intervention as a professional responsibility when encountering a woman who has experienced violence was found to be significantly higher than the other groups (p<.05). It is important for midwives and nurses to be aware of signs of violence to identify violence against women. Providing education to midwives and nurses regarding signs of violence against women will contribute to the recognition, prevention, and awareness of violence.


L'étude était une recherche transversale qui a enquêté sur 410 infirmières et sages-femmes de mars 2020 à mars 2021 en Turquie. L'objectif de cette étude est d'évaluer les connaissances et les attitudes des infirmières et des sages-femmes envers la reconnaissance de la violence contre les femmes. L'échelle de reconnaissance des symptômes de la violence contre les femmes des infirmières et des sages-femmes a été utilisée. Le score moyen total de l'échelle était de 20,3 ± 3,2. Le score des participants qui suivent une formation de troisième cycle, travaillant dans le domaine de la gynécologie et de l'obstétrique, et considérant l'intervention comme une responsabilité professionnelle lorsqu'ils rencontrent une femme victime de violence s'est avéré significativement plus élevé que les autres groupes (p<.001). Il est important que les sages-femmes et les infirmières soient conscientes des signes de violence pour identifier la violence contre les femmes. Fournir une éducation aux sages-femmes et aux infirmières concernant les signes de violence contre les femmes contribuera à la reconnaissance, à la prévention et à la sensibilisation à la violence.

AIM: This study aimed to describe nurse/midwife educators' understanding and enactment of teaching family planning methods with nursing/midwifery students in educational programs in Rwanda. More precisely, the aim of this study was to generate a substantive theory that explains how nurse/midwife educators introduce family planning methods into their teaching practice to facilitate learning among nurse/midwife students in Rwanda. BACKGROUND: High maternal mortality remains a global health issue. In 2017, approximately 295,000 women worldwide died from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth and 94% of these maternal deaths occurred in low-income countries. Evidence shows that family planning improves maternal health outcomes and significantly contributes to reducing maternal mortality. Low family planning uptake is partly attributed to inadequate education of healthcare providers to provide family planning services. DESIGN: This study followed the constructivist grounded theory methodology articulated by Kathy Charmaz (2006; 2014). METHODS: The primary data source was individual semi-structured interviews with 25 nurse/midwife educators recruited from all the schools/faculties/departments of nursing and midwifery in Rwanda, augmented with written documents related to family planning education in nursing/midwifery preservice programs. RESULTS: The substantive Theory that emerged from the data analysis indicated that the process of teaching family planning in preservice nursing/midwifery education among nurse/midwife educators has three phases: preparing, facilitating and evaluating. Factors that had an impact on the process and actions that nurse/midwife educators undertook to address the challenges related to those factors were identified. The main influential factors that had a significant impact on nurse/midwife educators' ability to teach family planning are contextual factors and personal factors related to the nurse/midwife educators. The contextual factors included the availability of resources, student-teacher ratio, number of students in clinical placements and the time allocated to the family planning unit. The personal factors related to the nurse/midwife educators included knowledge, skills, confidence, attitude, beliefs and moral values toward family planning methods. CONCLUSION: These study findings generated valuable knowledge that can guide the improvement of teaching family planning in preservice nursing/midwifery programs in Rwanda and other limited-resource countries and contexts. With the insights provided by this study, future research should investigate strategies to overcome highlighted barriers, increase nurse/midwife educators' expertise in teaching family planning and enhance the preparedness of nurse/midwife students on some family planning methods identified in this study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the perinatal death experience of midwifery students during clinical practice and their coping methods. DESIGN: A qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological design was used. SETTINGS: The study was conducted with midwifery students. PARTICIPANTS: The study was conducted with 14 midwifery students at a state university in northern Turkey between April and July 2023. METHODS: Perinatal death experiences that students witnessed during clinical practice and their coping methods were analyzed using the individual in-depth interview technique. Data were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. The results obtained from the study were reported according to the COREQ criteria. FINDINGS: As a result of the analysis, four main themes: (1) the perception of the concept of death, (2) the first encounter with death, (3) methods of coping with death, and (4) students' suggestions were elicited from the data. Students who witnessed perinatal death were affected by this situation, experienced negative emotions, and resorted to different methods to cope with their negative feelings about death. CONCLUSIONS: Midwifery students who witnessed perinatal death were negatively affected emotionally and professionally; therefore, education and policy-oriented regulations are needed to cope with perinatal death.

BACKGROUND: Almost all births in Finland occur in hospitals, but the concept of labor support behavior is not well-known among Finnish midwives. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to increase perceived labor support as measured by BANSILQ. METHODS: This study was tailored to evaluate the impacts of short on-the-job training interventions for midwives (n=70) in labor support given to mothers. The training was conducted at one university hospital and and one regional hospital during 2012. The trainings were carried out twice at both hospitals to reach as many miwdwives as possible to participate. Two university hospitals-one regional and one central-were selected as controls. New mothers were asked to complete the Bryanton Adaptation of the Nursing Support in Labor Questionnaire (BANSILQ) in the postpartum wards at all the selected hospitals before the intervention (n=1500) and after the intervention (n=1500). The data were linked to the Finnish Medical Birth Register (MBR). As this is an in-job training intervention study and not a trial, it has not been registered in a trial registry. RESULTS: The response rate was 68% (n=1020) for the pre-intervention survey and 47% (n=704) for the post-intervention survey. At the regional-level intervention hospital, the mean length of the second stage of childbirth decreased significantly. A bonding time of at least three minutes was three times more likely at both intervention hospitals. Support for breastfeeding was twice as likely at the university-level hospital after the intervention. In all the study hospitals, mothers with less education were more likely to receive tangible and informal support than highly educated mothers. CONCLUSIONS: This short on-the-job intervention did not increase labor support provided by Finnish midwives in its entirety, and the effect on birth outcomes was minimal. However, support for breastfeeding increased, and some types of support were targeted at those who needed it most. To improve midwifery care, both training and sufficient resources are needed.

INTRODUCTION: Continuing education is important to improve midwives' attitudes to trauma-informed care in addressing the needs of women during the perinatal period. This study aimed to evaluate if there was a significant difference in attitudes towards trauma-informed care between midwives who participated in a 2-day trauma-informed care education program and those who did not. METHOD: A static group comparison design was adopted with a convenience sample of midwives to analyse differences in attitudes towards trauma-informed care between midwives who received a 2-day TIC education (n = 19, intervention group) and their peers who did not receive the education (n = 18, comparison group). RESULTS: The results suggest that midwives who participated in a 2-day trauma-informed care education program had significantly higher scores for positive attitudes towards trauma-informed care compared to those who did not take part in the program and that this effect was sustained at 6 months. CONCLUSION: To minimise perinatal trauma for mothers and babies, midwives require specific trauma-informed care education. This study proposes that trauma-informed care education is a foundational pathway for implementing a trauma-informed care framework across a maternity service.

PROBLEM: In midwifery a shared definition of woman-centred care is lacking, and this remains an identified gap in the evidence underpinning midwifery practice. BACKGROUND: Woman-centred care is an underpinning philosophy used in midwifery practice both nationally and internationally. AIM: To analyse the practice of woman-centred care to clarify its meaning and comprehension and subsequently advance an evidence-based definition of the concept. METHODS: Using an adapted theoretical and colloquial evolutionary model a three-stage concept analysis was conducted to identify attributes, antecedents, and consequences of woman-centred care and subsequently construct an evidence-based, internationally informed definition. FINDINGS: Antecedents of woman-centred care are education, models of care and midwife characteristics. Attributes are choice and control, empowerment, and relationships. Consequences are shared and informed decision making which supports the woman in navigating complex health systems, and improved health outcomes. Whilst important to midwifery practice and midwifery-led models of care, continuity of care is not a core essential element of woman-centred care. DISCUSSION: Analysis, synthesis, and re-examination of the data on woman-centred care facilitated deep immersion, exploration and clarification of this concept that underpins midwifery philosophy and practice. The constructed definition can be used to inform health policy, midwifery research, education, and clinical practice. CONCLUSION: An evidence-based definition of woman-centred care is necessary for conversion of this essential concept to practice. Regardless of model of care all women should receive woman-centre care improving the health outcomes of both the woman and neonate.

BACKGROUND: Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) accounts for 90% of all new paediatric HIV infections in Nigeria and for approximately 30% of the global burden. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a training model that incorporated case managers working closely with traditional birth attendants (TBAs) to ensure linkage to care for HIV-positive pregnant women. METHODS: This study was a 3-arm parallel design cluster randomized controlled trial in Ifo and Ado-Odo Ota, Ogun State, Nigeria. The study employed a random sampling technique to allocate three distinct TBA associations as clusters. Cluster 1 received training exclusively; Cluster 2 underwent training in addition to the utilization of case managers, and Cluster 3 served as a control group. In total, 240 TBAs were enrolled in the study, with 80 participants in each of the intervention and control groups. and were followed up for a duration of 6 months. We employed a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistical test to evaluate the differences between baseline and endline HIV knowledge scores and PMTCT practices. Additionally, bivariate analysis using the chi-square test was used to investigate linkage to care. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis was utilized to identify TBA characteristics associated with various PMTCT interventions, including the receipt of HIV test results and repeat testing at term for HIV-negative pregnant women. The data analysis was performed using Stata version 16.1.877, and we considered results statistically significant when p values were less than 0.05. RESULTS: At the end of this study, there were improvements in the TBAs' HIV and PMTCT-related knowledge within the intervention groups, however, it did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). The referral of pregnant clients for HIV testing was highest (93.5%) within cluster 2 TBAs, who received both PMTCT training and case manager support (p ≤ 0.001). The likelihood of HIV-negative pregnant women at term repeating an HIV test was approximately 4.1 times higher when referred by TBAs in cluster 1 (AOR = 4.14; 95% CI [2.82-5.99]) compared to those in the control group and 1.9 times in cluster 2 (AOR = 1.93; 95% CI [1.3-2.89]) compared to the control group. Additionally, older TBAs (OR = 1.62; 95% CI [1.26-2.1]) and TBAs with more years of experience in their practice (OR = 1.45; 95% CI [1.09-1.93]) were more likely to encourage retesting among HIV-negative women at term. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of case managers and PMTCT training was more effective than training alone for TBAs in facilitating the linkage to care of HIV-positive pregnant women, although this effect did not reach statistical significance. Larger-scale studies to further investigate the benefits of case manager support in facilitating the linkage to care for PMTCT of HIV are recommended. AIM: The aim is to present outcome and engagement data from the initial years of the implementation of a new teaching approach in entry to practice nursing and midwifery education. BACKGROUND: The Block Model (TBM) is a teaching approach that involves studying one unit of study at a time over a four-week period, as opposed to the traditional semester model. This paper presents data revealing the impact of TBM on student engagement and overall experience in entry to practice Bachelor of Nursing and Midwifery programs. DESIGN: The evaluation retrospectively compared key indicators pre- Block Model implementation with outcomes for nursing and midwifery students using TBM approach using standard data sets and external comparators such as the Student Experience Survey and National Employability Survey. METHODS: The study presents a comparative analysis of key indicators and graduate outcomes for students. We use reportable data and two external comparators, the Student Experience Survey and the National Employability Survey, to gauge student learning and graduate employability. The evaluation was conducted in a tertiary institution in Australia with for nursing and midwifery students who completed their studies using TBM approach at the university. RESULTS: The implementation of TBM in nursing and midwifery programs resulted in improvements in learner engagement, retention rates and pass rates. Improvements were also noted graduate outcomes, with an increase in full-time graduate employment. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest the Block Model is a promising new teaching approach in nursing and midwifery education, with potential benefits for learner engagement, retention and pass rates.

BACKGROUND: Communication and entrepreneurship skills, which have a very important place among the 21st century skills, are among the basic skills that a midwife should have. OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the Communication Skills Education Program on the communication and entrepreneurship skills of the midwifery students. DESIGN: This study was designed a quasi-experimental study. SETTINGS: Online. PARTICIPANTS: First grade Bachelor of Midwifery Science students (n = 117). METHODS: In this study, the Communication Skills Education Program was given to midwifery students. The Communication Skills Assessment Scale and University Students Entrepreneurship Scale were administered before the education program was implemented (pre-test), when the training program was completed (post-test), and six months after the education program was completed (post-test). Classified data were given in numbers and percentage distribution. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the variables. In order to test the significance of the difference between pre-test, post-test and follow-test the repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was performed. RESULTS: The mean age of the participating students was 19.46 ± 1.74 (min. 18.0, max: 31.0) years. While 8.5 % of the students received training on communication previously, 7.7 % of the students received education on entrepreneurship previously. Statistically significant differences were determined between the scores the students obtained at the pre-test, post-test and follow-up test [F = 224.38, p = .00/F = 325.13, p = .00]. The Bonferroni test performed to find out from which tests the difference stemmed demonstrated that there was a significant difference between the mean scores obtained at all the tests. According to the analysis of the relationship between the mean scores the students obtained from the scales, there was a moderately significant positive correlation only between their pre-test mean scores. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, we determined that the Communication Skills Education Program improved the students' communication and entrepreneurship skills.
